Dwarf Mango Tree

September 12th, 2011

Everyone loves mangos.  They are a real tropical fruit and one of the summer pleasures of living up north.  However, not everyone has the space to plant a Mango Tree in the backyard.  These trees can grow up to 15m and take a lot of space.  The solution – a Dwarf Mango Tree!

Growing between 2-4m, Dwarf Mango Trees can be planted in the ground or kept in a pot.  Although they do take a while to bear fruit (mine took four years) once underway, fruiting is regular with a moderate yield.

Giant Bird of Paradise

September 8th, 2010

Strelitzia nicolai commonly known as the “Giant Bird of Paradise” is a stunning landscaping plant perfect for tropical gardens.  Growing between 4-6m, this clumping, banana-like plant has erect woody stems and broad, grey-green coloured leaves which are about 1.8m long and arranged like a fan at the top of the stems.  Perhaps the most stunning feature of this plant is its white and blue flowers.  The inflorescence is composed of a dark blue bract, white sepals and a bluish-purple tongue. A real statement piece for tropical gardens.

Beehive Ginger

May 15th, 2010

Beehive GingerGingers are a real feature of tropical gardens and the Beehive Ginger (Zingiber zerumbet) is a particularly attractive specimen, which I have at my place.

Growing up to 2m this is a very easy to grow, clumping member of the Ginger family.  It has long narrow leaves and in mid summer it produces separate stalks that come out of the ground with large, green, cone-shaped bracts.  Over time, the bracts turn bright red and small, yellow flowers appear out of the cone. Flowers last for weeks and flowering can occur continuously for six months of the year, making this an excellent garden and cut flower plant.

Golden Penda

May 15th, 2010

Cairns’ floral emblem, the Golden Penda (Xanthostemon chrysanthus), is our landscaping plant of the month and there is a dwarf variety, the ‘Fairhill Gold’ which is an ideal garden specimen as it only grows to 3m.  The Golden Penda is native to our region and is perfect for creating shade, attracting birds and butterflies and requires little maintenance.

Related to bottlebrushes, the Golden Penda has stunning, yellow flowers, which are up to 150mm in diameter, appear en masse, creating dazzling, colorful displays in your garden and attracting nectar-loving birds, such as rainbow lorikeets.

As a native, the Golden Penda will thrive in your garden.  It likes full sun and moist soil. Spectacular when flowering, the Golden Penda is attractive year round with dark, glossy green leaves.

Lawn Tips

May 15th, 2010

Your garden is enjoying ideal growing conditions.  Keep it looking good with Marie’s tips:

Fertilize the turf.  A bit of work now, will pay off in the long term.  Apply lawn fertilizer and spread appropriately.  Water it in and let the rain take care of the soaking.  Come winter, your grass will be lush and healthy.  Remember, you should reapply fertilizer every 8-10 weeks.

Weeding.  Nothing makes a garden bed look more untidy than a weed infestation and right now, weeds are prolific. Hand-pick the weeds – this controls growth and stops spreading.  You can also spray, but this may get washed off by rain.  Weeding brings your garden back to its best.

Mulch.  Nothing finishes off a garden bed more than mulching.  It makes the garden tidy, inhibits weed growth and retains moisture in the bed for your plants, meaning less watering in winter.  Marie recommends applying organic, slow release, fertilizer pellets prior to mulching.

Pruning.  Make your garden a showcase with regular pruning.  Growing will slow soon, so best to get everything in shape, to keep it looking spick and span throughout the dry season.
